Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia, and the country's largest administrative, educational, cultural, and scientific centre. Still, it is a charming, typical Central-European city of little less than 800.000 inhabitants, while its metropolitan area is populated by something like a million people. Not to big to confuse you, yet big enough to offer a lot. The tradition of the higher education in Zagreb dates back to 1669 when the University of Zagreb, the oldest university in this part of Europe was founded. The workshop
will take place at the Ruđer Bošković Institute
in Zagreb, Bijenička cesta 54, HR-10000 Zagreb, Croatia. The Institute is easily
reachable from Zagreb downtown by
From Ravnice Youth Hostel to Kaptol, take tram No. 11 (direction: Črnomerec) or 12 (direction: Ljubljanica) to the main city square (tram stop: Trg Bana Josipa Jelačića, picture on the left). From this elegant square, go through the Harmica passage (just behind the equestrian statue of Ban Josip Jelačić which proudly dominates the square), climbe to the top of the stairs, and take a minute to enjoy the charming open air market Dolac, one of the city symbols. From there, you are at just a few steps away of the breath-taking neogothic Saint Stephen's Cathedral (picture on the right) in front of which (in fact, about 50 m to your left while standing in front of and admiring the Cathedral) you'll find your bus to go to the Ruđer Bošković Institute (bus No. 106, 201 or 226, you'll leave the bus at the bus stop "Institut Ruđer Bošković"). For more information on tram and bus lines and schedules, please visit www.zet.hr.
Once at the Institute, you should look for the building 1 (I krilo) which is the first building on your left, when walking along the road which goes straight from the main entrance. On your way, you will see, on your left, the statue of the great scholar from Dubrovnik, after whom the Institute was named, Ruđer Bošković (picture on the left). The statue is a masterpiece of the greatest Croatian sculptor of all times - Ivan Meštrović. In the building 1, you will easily find the lecture room (Dvorana) on the ground floor. See you there!
