RBI Scientist Snježana Jurić Receives Prestigious "Željko Trgovčević" Award

Zagreb, 16 Mar 2010 – At the recently held annual meeting of the Croatian Genetics Society, Snježana Jurić was awarded the prestigious "Željko Trgovčević" award for research excellence in the field of molecular biology and genetics. Commemoration in Honor of Professor Greta Pifat-Mrzljak

Zagreb, 16 Mar 2010 - A commemoration in honor of our dearly departed colleague, Professor Greta Pifat-Mrzljak, was held today at the Ruđer Bošković Institute. Together with many dignitaries and scientists the ceremony featured contributions from the General Director of the RBI, Danica Ramljak, PhD, the Rector of the University of Zagreb, Dr. Aleksa Bjeliš, the Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Nanosystem research in Austria, Professor Peter Laggner, the Austrian Ambassador to Croatia and Mr. Jan Kickert. The Ruđer Bošković Institute Initiates Collaboration With the Prestigious Weizmann Institute in Israel

Zagreb, 10 Mar 2010 - The official Croatian delegation, consisting of the Croatian Ambassador in Israel, Zorica Matković, the General Director of the RBI, Danica Ramljak, PhD, and the Director's Advisor for International Collaboration at the RBI, Mary Sopta, PhD, visited the Weizmann Institute in Israel today. Zagreb, 8 Mar 2010 – At a recent meeting of the Scientific Council of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, a new concept of scientific projects and their application was presented. Marking the International Rare Disease Day

Zagreb, 1 Mar 2010 - As a part of activities regarding the International Rare Disease Day (Feb 28) at the 'Tribine grada Zagreba' today was held a round table under the name Rare diseases in Croatia: On the threshold of European changes. At the roundtable, which brought together medical experts, representatives of associations and patients, Danica Ramljak, PhD, director of RBI participated as well. There were discussed problems which face people with the rear diseases in Croatia - from the science researchs to diagnosis, treatments and socialization.

Intellectual Property is the Driving Force Behind Croatian Economic Growth

Zagreb, 1 Mar 2010 - At the one-day business conference on intellectual property Intelektiv, which was held at the Sheraton Hotel, it was concluded that the Croatian system of intellectual property has developed to the highest international standards. The conference gathered nearly 150 participants from all over Croatia. The conference which included 14 lectures and two round table discussions discussed trends and future directions in the commercialization, management and protection of intellectual property, and valuable experiences were exchanged. Croatian-Austrian Bilateral Project Success

Zagreb, 26 Feb 2010 - RBI scientists Neda Slade, PhD, and Arijana Zorić, PhD, from the Laboratory of Molecular Oncology, Department of Molecular Medicine in collaboration with colleagues from the Medical Faculty at Innsbruck and the Medical School in Vienna published an article in the prestigious journal Oncogene. Mathematical Methods and Modeling for Students of Chemistry and Biology Published

Zagreb, 26 Jan 2010 – In December of 2009, the book Mathematical Methods and Modeling for Students of Chemistry and Biology edited by Ante Graovac, PhD, Ivan Gutman, PhD, and Damir Vukičević, PhD, was published by Hum Copies Ltd., Zagreb.

The book is intended as supplementary literature for undergraduate and postgraduate students of chemistry, biology and mathematics. The book is comprised of fourteen articles covering themes ranging from modeling in natural science, particularly using methods from mathematical chemistry, applications to research correlating structure with activity, bioinformatics and new carbon nanomaterials.

Zagreb, 26 Jan 2010 - On Saturday, 23 Jan 2010, Croatia’s president-elect Professor Ivo Josipović, PhD, was a guest on a popular music show on Radio Sljeme. In the first part of the show Professor Josipović conversed with the show’s host on the subject of music, while in the second part of the show he answered a series of questions posed by prominent public figures from the fields of culture and science, including Danica Ramljak, PhD, Director General of the Ruđer Bošković Institute.

RBI Scientists Published an Article in the Leading Analytical Chemistry Journal

Zagreb, 25 Jan 2010 - Analytical Chemistry (IF: 5.712), the world's leading journal in the field of analytical chemistry, has accepted for publication article Blind separation of analytes in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry: sparseness-based robust multicomponent analysis by Ivica Kopriva, PhD (DLARD) and Ivanka Jerić, PhD (DOCB). The article describes a method for blind extraction of analytes from mixtures. The method is exemplified on the examples in NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Read more...

European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

Zagreb, 22 Jan 2010 - The fourth year in a row Croatia is marking the European Week of Cervical Cancer Prevention in the organization of the European Association against cervical cancer (ECCA), whose member is the Ruđer Bošković Institute as well. The aim of this action, which is being held on 24 - 30 January 2010, is to raise public awareness about cervical cancer and ways of its prevention.

The central event will be the summit of the European Parliament, which will be held on 26 and 27 January in Brussels. Croatia is planning a series of events with educational stands for the public at the Department of Public Health 'Dr. Andrija Štampar' (January 25 at 6:00 p.m.), stands for professional pharmacists in the Croatian Pharmaceutical Company (January 28 at 6:00 p.m.) and officially marking of The Week of Cervical Cancer Prevention at the Croatian Parliament (January 28 at 1:30p.m.).

Cambridge Structural Database Workshop at RBI

Zagreb, 23 Dec 2009 - The Governing Board of the National Foundation for Science, Higher Education and Technological Development of the Republic of Croatia (NZZ) at its last session in 2009 positively evaluated project Cambridge Structural Database Workshop in Zagreb by the RBI scientist Alexander Višnjevac, PhD. Based on this evaluation the RBI will host the Workshop on March 3rd and 4th 2010. The workshop will gather postgraduate and doctoral students from five countries of the Southeast European region (Croatia, Slovenia, B&H, Serbia and Macedonia). Read more...

The Success of the Croatian-Hungarian Bilateral Cooperation Between RBI and MFA (KFKI)

Zagreb, 23 Dec 2009 - RBI scientists Stjepan Lugomer, PhD and Aleksandar Maksimović, PhD from the Laboratory of Molecular Physics of the Division of Material Physics, in cooperation with their Hungarian colleagues from the Research Institute for Technical Physics and Materials science (MFA) at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences published the valuable scientific paper on Nanostructuring of a silicon surface by laser redeposition of Si vapor in the prestigious Journal of Applied Physics. In their paper scientists experimentally and theoretically explained the process of forming silicon nanoparticles with IC laser method of redeposition Si-steam. Read more...
