Within the FP6 project AMS-14C, a Workshop on AMS was organized at the RBI on 27 Nov. 2008. Preparation activities for the Workshop started in September by delivering a letter to the members of IAB (see below). An informal meeting of the co-ordinator of the project and two members of IAB (P. Grootes, E.M. Scott) was held in Rome during the AMS-11 Conference. All members of the IAB from EU-MSs expressed their willingness to and prepare talks to the workshop participants. However, none of them was able to come to Zagreb at any time in the proposed period between app. 15 Nov and 10 Dec. Finally, the Workshop was organized without lecturers coming from collaborating institutions in EU-MS.
The first announcement was prepared in Croatian and English (see below), and the Registration form was prepared. Information was sent by e-mail to various collaborating institutions in Croatia and neighboring countries, information was put on the project web page (together with the file that could have been downloaded and the registration from sent back by e-mail) and on the Institute’s web portal, information for media was prepared in co-operation with the Public Relation office of the RBI. Information about the workshop was announced also on various different web portals.
There were 75 registered participants, 53 of them from various scientific and cultural institutions (museums, Ministry of culture) from Croatia, and 22 from Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary and France.
The lectures held by the RBI staff covered presentations of the Radiocarbon Laboratory and the Laboratory for Ion Beam Interactions, sample preparation and measurement techniques for radiocarbon dating, various applications of 14C measurement, some most important results obtained in the RBI Radiocarbon laboratory, and the presentation of the new database ZAGRADA that was developed within the AMS-14C project (see the final program below). After lectures and vivid discussion, the visit to the Radiocarbon laboratory was organized. The participants were divided into three groups that were informed about 1) sample preparation procedures, 2) measurement techniques for 14C, and 3) data evaluation and the ZAGRADA database.
We organized two coffee-breaks in a hall in front of the lecture room and a joint lunch buffet in the cantina. Each participant received a specially prepared bag (enclosed in the package together with the hard copies of the reports) with some souvenirs (obtained free-of-charge), a copy of the Collection of lecture.
The Workshop was a successfully organized event and showed a great interest for radiocarbon dating and other 14C applications in Croatia and in neighbouring countries.
To participants coming from other cities in Croatia and from other countries we reimbursed some travel and/or accommodation expenses.
