Introduction

Laboratory for electromagnetic and weak interactions

Scientists of Laboratory for electromagnetic and weak interactions develop new approaches to search for particles beyond the standard model and perform research in quantum information at the Ruđer Bošković Institute (IRB). We are also actively involved in the CERN experiment designed to search for solar axions - CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) as well as in the CERN-LNGS experiment OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus) designed to investigate neutrino oscillations.

Astroparticle physics experiments at IRB

  • The main goal is the search for solar axions and other particles beyond the standard model of interest for dark matter and unified theory of particle physics and gravity.

The CAST experiment

The CAST experiment searches for axions produced in a two-photon interaction in the solar core. In a laboratory magnetic field axions could be transformed into X-rays. Axions are hypothetical particles which resolve the strong CP problem, and are also candidates for the dark matter.

Our activities:

  • Data taking coordination
  • Theoretical calculations regarding the CAST sensitivity
  • Additional physics in CAST (axions from nuclear transitions, Kaluza-Klein axions)
  • Participation in the TPC detector design, data taking, data analysis

The OPERA experiment

CERN's eksperiment CNGS1 also known as OPERA tries to give an answer to the question of neutrino masses and whether neutrinos of different flavours spontaneously “oscillate” from one flavour to another. Specifically, OPERA has been designed for very sensitive detection of possible oscillations between muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos.

Our activities in OPERA:

  • Prototyping and testing of bakelite RPC detectors
  • Taking part in construction, testing and installation of the GRPC detectors in the VETO system of OPERA
  • Work in the Electronic Detectors group ot the OPERA experiment
  • Data taking and analysis.

Quantum information

In 2007 our laboratory has introduced, for the first time in Croatia, experimental research of quantum information. The most active topics of this research are: entanglement, logic circuits for quantum computation, single photon detectors, random numbers and quantum cryptography. We are also looking for innovations with possible commercial potential.
