Location and staff

Department of Molecular Biology is located in a new building within a pleasant surrounding of Ruđer Bošković Institute campus. Currently there are 30 scientists, 30 Ph.D. and postdoctoral students and 9 members of technical staff working at the Department.

Research

The main research activities of the Department are:

-         study of recombination and DNA repair in bacteria

-         regulation of transcription and translation

-         plant molecular and cell biology, study of biological activity of plant hormones

-         cellular aging; cell response to genotoxic agents

-         evolutionary and population genetics; molecular biology of marine sponges

-         organization and evolution of noncoding DNA

-         neurochemistry and molecular biology of synaptic transmission

Infrastructure

Department is equipped with transmission electron microscope EM-10 Zeiss, confocal microscope Leica, fluorescent microscope Opton with CCD camera, system for automatic DNA sequencing Alf Express, Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis BIO-RAD CHEF-DR III, equipment for biochemical  work (FPLC and HPLC systems, centrifuges etc.) and small equipment for molecular biological work (PCR machines, gel electrophoresis systems etc.).

Education

All the scientists of the Department are actively participating in the education by teaching at 40 courses either at the collaborative studies between Ruder Boskovic Institute and Universities, or at the Universities of Zagreb and Osijek . Department of Molecular biology is organizing the Methodological Courses in Biology in Medicine in collaboration with other Departments of Ruđer Bošković Institute.
