Laboratory for Molecular Genetics

Combining biochemical and genetic approaches in order to elucidate the structure and evolution of genes/ genomes, as well as the function of their products – proteins and RNAs, we investigate basic molecular processes using two model organisms: sponges and streptomycetes.

Laboratory for Molecular Genetics (LMG) was founded in 1991 and investigates basic molecular processes in living organisms, using the combination of biochemical and genetic approaches in order to elucidate the structure and evolution of genes/ genomes, as well as the function of their products – proteins and RNAs.

Two groups in Laboratory are involved in studying specific and evolutionary conserved aspects of the biology of the complex bacteria Streptomyces and of the sponges – simple ancient animals with complex genomes.

Main research areas within the Laboratory are:

  • the role of Ser/Thr/Tyr phosphorylation, its importance for DNA metabolism, particularly for SSB protein in streptomycetes
  • characterization of proteins involved in poly(ADP-ribose) metabolism in streptomycetes
  • studying sponge genes and proteins whose homologs are involved in human diseases or in transition to multicellularity in the animal lineage
  • biodiversity of Croatian sponges and other endemic taxa using molecular genetics methods
