The Workshop under the title “Biogeochemical processes in anoxic marine environments“ was held in Zagreb in January (17-20, 2004). The workshop was organized in the frame of International Networking for Young Scientists (INYS) through the project supported by British Council and Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia: “Multidisciplinary study of biogeochemical processes in Rogoznica Lake (a marine lake at the eastern Adriatic coast) “.
Organizing and
scientific Committee of the workshop:
Chairperson: Irena
Ciglenečki-Jušić
Vice-chairman: Stan van den Berg
Nikola Bošković, Neven Cukrov, Marta Plavšić and Božena Ćosović (in alphabetical order)
This open-type meeting was gather more than 40 people, which are prominent young and senior scientist from UK and Croatia as well as from Germany, France and the US. Major topics of this interdisciplinary workshop were focused on the physical and biogeochemical processes occurring in marine and freshwater aquatic systems in connection with natural and anthropogenic eutrophication. In regard to the name of the project and long-term investigations which have been performed in water column and sediments of Rogoznica Lake (this lake forms a good model for anoxic processes in marine conditions) one afternoon was devoted to the discussion of the biogeochemical processes which are occurring in this unique karstic system on the Adriatic coast.
The major purpose of this Network, which was to bring together marine scientists (chemists, biologists, microbiologists, geologists, physicists) was successfully realized since talks and discussions during the workshop enhanced the understanding of general principles as well as exchange of information, knowledge, and stimulated new research ideas in this area. The workshop was closed with an around table discussion about possibilities of future funding in the frame of some EU projects.
In the frame of the workshop a half-day sightseeing tour around Zagreb city was organized for all participants.
All informations related to the workshop have been open to the public through the web page: http://www.irb.hr/cimz/workshop.html and the project itself was described in “Rudjer Boskovic” Institute’s newsletters.
