Due to its shallowness and closed nature, the northern Adriatic is particularly sensitive to external influences, especially to changes in the surface flux of moisture, energy and matter. It is recognized as a Mediterranean “hot spot” of climate change because it is expected to be under significantly greater environmental pressures in the future than most other marine systems. The area also has wider importance because it is the source of dense bottom water in winter that emerges from the Adriatic and carries nutrients and oxygen to the Mediterranean Sea.
