The project focuses on investigating the release of micro- and nanoplastics from Cedevita plastic packaging into water under different storage conditions and assessing their potential effects on human cells. Particular emphasis is placed on characterizing the released particles according to size and the presence of micro- and nanoplastics, as well as evaluating their effects on cellular metabolic activity, oxidative stress, and activation of the antioxidant response. Biological effects are examined using Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cells, HepG2 hepatocytes, and macrophages derived from THP-1 monocytes, with commercial HDPE and PP particles used as reference materials. The aim is to link storage conditions and the levels of micro- and nanoplastic release with their potential biological effects, thereby providing a comprehensive assessment of plastic packaging safety. The project is conducted in collaboration between Cedevita and the Laboratory for Metabolism and Ageing at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, combining expertise in micro- and nanoplastic characterization with cellular and molecular biology.
