Principle of work
Ion chromatography is a very useful technique for qualitative and quantitative determination of ionic species in solution: cations, anions and polar molecules. This technique is based on the principle of chromatographic separation and difference in affinity of the ingredients in the sample to ion-exchange and sorption on column. Ion exchange takes place in the column packed with the stationary phase, which is actually an ion-exchange resin with active functional groups, positively or negatively charged. The corresponding counterions to a particular functional group is replaced by other ions of the same charge, or from the mobile phase, or eluent. The eluent is an inert medium which does not react chemically with the sample, and the sample is transferred from the ingredients of the column to the conductometric detector. Each ion exchange ion defines the equilibrium. The result is ion chromatography curve showing the dependence of the signal on time. Each ingredient has its own characteristic residence time in the column, so-called retention time. It is constant at constant conditions of ion chromatographic analysis. The small ions are eluted before the large ions, and also a monovalent before di- and tri-valent ions.
