The Malvern Panalytical Empyrean diffractometer is a high-performance, multi-purpose X-ray diffraction (XRD) platform designed for advanced materials characterization in research and industrial laboratories. It is built around a highly flexible modular architecture that allows it to switch between different measurement geometries and applications without changing the core instrument. The system is most commonly used for powder XRD (Bragg–Brentano geometry), but can also be configured for thin films, grazing incidence XRD (GIXRD), small-angle scattering (SAXS), total scattering, and in situ experiments. A key feature of the Empyrean is its optical flexibility. It supports interchangeable incident- and diffracted-beam optics, including programmable slits, monochromators, and mirror systems. This makes it suitable for both high-resolution crystallography and fast routine phase identification. Detection is handled by advanced solid-state detector PIXcel3D Medipix area detector, enabling rapid data acquisition in 0D, 1D, or 2D modes. This allows researchers to trade off between speed, resolution, and reciprocal-space coverage depending on the experiment.
