Rigaku XtaLAB Synergy-S is an X-ray diffractometer for X-ray diffraction on a single crystal. It has two PhotonJet-S microfocus sources of X-rays, with anodes made of molybdenum (Mo) and copper (Cu). These third-generation X-ray tubes in combination with microfocus optics represent strong sources of collimated radiation of wavelengths of 0.071 and 0.154 nm. XtaLAB Synergy-S monocrystalline X-ray diffractometer comes with a four-circuit goniometer, in the so-called. kappa configuration, and has a high speed motor for crystal orientation. The system is equipped with a highly sensitive and fast X-ray detector (HyPix-6000HE). Very small samples of crystals of small organic molecules and crystals of biological macromolecules such as proteins, less than 10 micrometers in size, can also be measured on this instrument. The diffractometer is equipped with a cryostat that allows the collection of data on samples in the temperature range from 90 to 400 K.

Principle of work
An X-ray diffractometer for single crystals illuminates the crystal sample with a beam of X-rays of a fixed wavelength. The structure of the molecules that make up the crystal is determined from a series of diffraction images obtained in various positions of the crystal. It is possible to determine the positions of atoms in molecules at the atomic level. The instrument can record data on molecules from just a few atoms to large molecules with tens of thousands of atoms such as proteins.

• Four-circle kappa goniometer for high precision crystal positioning and orientation (sphere of confusion less than 10 μm) • Equiped with dual wavelength X-ray source with Cu and Mo anodes mounted on the same goniometer • Two dimensional, low noise, direct photon counting X-ray detector with fast readout times (in ms) and high dynamic range (at least 24 bits) and no dimension reduction (with eg. optical tapers) • Exchangable collimators with apertures 0.2-0.7 mm • Safety cabinet with wide opening for easy access to the goniometer, with internal lighting with low heat production • Closed circuit, reliable and robust cooling of X-ray tube and detector (air or water) • High voltage generator power supply with high voltage and current stability (50 kV, 1mA) • Two goniometer heads with possibility of mounting the crystals on glass needles and in cryo loops • High intensity microfocs X-ray tubes with focusing of X-rays onto sample crystal and producing low divergence X-ray beam. • Liquid nitrogen cryo device capable of maintaining the sample at 100 K with no interruptions. One movable liquid nitrogen vessel of at least 130 L capacity for refilling the system. • PC for operating the instrument with software for data acquisition on small molecule and protein samples installed and free upgrades.
