Green Routes to Industrially Relevant Zeolite Materials: Understanding Formation Mechanisms and Active Site Development
Principal investigator
The GreenZeo project aims to develop sustainable, solvent-lean routes for synthesising industrially relevant zeolites while advancing understanding of their formation and active site development. Conventional hydrothermal synthesis is energy-intensive and largely empirical due to limited mechanistic insight. The project introduces thermomilling (simultaneous milling and heating) as an alternative synthesis platform enabling direct zeolite formation from molecular precursors. Objectives include: 1) establishing reproducible thermomilling protocols for key frameworks (MFI, CHA, BEA, MOR) and benchmarking against oven synthesis; 2) elucidating crystallisation pathways; 3) developing strategies for Ti/Zr Lewis site incorporation; and 4) correlating synthesis, structure, and catalytic performance. The methodology integrates synthesis, modification, advanced characterisation, and catalytic testing. A dedicated thermomilling setup will be developed, with parallel oven systems providing references. The project will deliver green synthesis protocols, mechanistic insights, and structure–function relationships, advancing zeolite research toward predictive design and sustainable catalysis.
