CEMS – Scientific Center of Excellence for Advanced Materials and Sensors
CEMS brings together four cutting-edge units (materials, 2D structures, photonics and ion beams) into a unique system for the development of future technologies. Through infrastructure projects (CALT and O-ZIP), the Center is equipped with state-of-the-art accelerator systems and the only ISO 5 clean room in Croatia. Research is focused on three key pillars:
(1) Advanced materials: "Bottom-up" and "top-down" synthesis (nanostructures, MBE, magnetron sputtering) with precise characterization (SEM, AFM, TOF-ERDA).
(2) Green energy: Development of materials for fusion reactors (partnership at IFMIF-DONES), new generations of quantum dot solar cells and advanced Li-ion batteries.
(3) Quantum technologies: Quantum communication and cryptography, neuromorphic quantum-stochastic computer for application in AI, deterministic ion doping for single photon emitters and on-chip sensors for IoT and robotics.
As a national leader, CEMS turns state-of-the-art physics into patented and applicable solutions for the digital and energy transition.
