Scour around bridge piers poses a significant risk to its structural stability. Although riprap protection is a common remediation measure, practical experience has shown that it does not prevent scour formation but rather shifts it downstream, creating additional risks. Despite extensive research into bridge scour, the impact of riprap protection on scour variability remains unexplored. This project aims to establish a scientifically grounded and technically viable framework for field monitoring of scour development around riprap protection during high-flow events, utilizing the innovative ScourBuoy—a buoy equipped for the remote collection of riverbed bathymetry data. Complementary laboratory experiments will be conducted using an instrumented particle to characterize the turbulent flow influencing the temporal evolution of the scour hole. The collected data will form a unique dataset enabling the development of a predictive model for scour hole evolution, thereby providing early insight into infrastructure risks. Expected outcomes include scientific publications, knowledge transfer to the industry, and the development of a digital tool for river infrastructure management.
