Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne infectious disease in the northern hemisphere transmitted by ticks. Due to climate change, the spread of infected ticks and the incidence of this infectious disease are constantly increasing. Around 500 cases are confirmed in the Republic of Croatia every year. The causative agents of the disease are bacteria from the Borreliella (syn. Borrelia) burgdorferi complex. It is unclear which species from the complex occur in which tick species. Through the participation of citizens as collaborators who will collect ticks removed from humans and animals and send them for analysis, we will precisely determine the species-specific burden for three pathogens from the complex, and at the same time gain insight into the distribution and biodiversity of potential vectors in the Republic of Croatia. All participants will be educated on a number of important facts related to ticks and Lyme disease.
