In the world we live in, there are many viruses. Current viral tests typically determine whether a tested sample is positive or negative for a specific virus (e.g., SARS-CoV-2). These tests target only one virus, rather than identifying which virus among all present in the sample is causing the disease—that is, the actual pathogen (whether SARS-CoV-2, influenza, or an unknown virus). VirusHunter is a test designed precisely for this purpose: it identifies the specific virus causing the disease. Instead of giving a simple positive or negative answer, the test result is the identification of the virus itself. But VirusHunter can do even more. The test can be tailored to the host, whether human, animal, or plant, and it identifies only those viruses that are potentially pathogenic. The project goal is to determine the necessary sensitivity and specificity of the VirusHunter method for human respiratory viruses and to develop a prototype diagnostic test for patients with unknown viral diseases under real-world conditions.
