Dr. sc. Božena Ćosović

Dr. Božena Ćosović was born in 1940 in Zagreb. She graduated in 1963 from the Faculty of Technology in Zagreb. She earned her Master’s degree in 1965 and her PhD in 1967 in chemical sciences at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb.

She joined the Ruđer Bošković Institute in 1963, and in 1989 became a Senior Research Associate at the Division for Marine and Environmental Research.

She served as Head of the Division from 1991 to 2002, and from 2000 to 2002 she was Assistant Director for Science. From 1997 to 2002, she also directed the permanent scientific research program “Environmental Risk Research in the Adriatic and Continental Croatia.”

Her scientific research interests include the chemistry of aquatic systems, development of new methods in marine and environmental research, fundamental and applied electrochemical studies, characterization of organic matter in natural waters, and adsorption processes at model and natural phase boundaries.

She published more than 125 scientific papers in CC journals, book chapters, as well as numerous technical reports, professional papers, and studies. From 1992 to 2003, she was a member of the European Science Foundation – European Environmental Research Organisation (ESF-EERO), and from 1995 to 2003, a member of its Council.

She lectured at postgraduate studies in Natural Sciences in the fields of Chemistry and Oceanology at the University of Zagreb, and at the interdisciplinary doctoral study “Nature and Environmental Protection” at the University of Osijek.

From 2000 to 2010, she led two projects in the field of marine research and advancement of education in this area, financed by the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation.
