Invited lecture of dr. Zoran Kiralj in Croatian Ecological Society

Apr 23rd 2026

Dr. Zoran Kiralj will hold an invited lecture on 29th April 2026 at 16:00, in lecture-room BO6 at Department of Biology of Faculty of Science (Marulićev trg 20 (II floor), Zagreb). The title and the contents of the lecture are the following:

Invisible threats, visible effects: diffuse pollution of river ecosystems

Lecture content: Diffuse pollution is one of the main causes of water quality deterioration today, but unlike point sources, it is much more difficult to monitor. It results from a wide range of activities - from agriculture to wastewater runoff, and its impact is most pronounced during heavy rainfall and high water levels. This lecture will present so far achieved results and plans for research on the Mura River, one of the most valuable river ecosystems in Europe, where clear signals of diffuse pollution can be observed. Given the great biodiversity of such systems, water and sediment pollution can have significant consequences. Special emphasis will be placed on metals as extremely important global pollutants. Additionally, it will be shown in what ways diffuse pollution can affect freshwater organisms and how events in the ecosystem can be "read" using various methods, from chemical and biochemical analyses to monitoring physiological and population changes.

As part of the lecture, HrZZ project BeDIFFERENCE will be presented.
