Within the framework of the Scientific and Technological Cooperation between Austria and Croatia, this project investigates how Sirt3 and sex shape hepatic mitochondrial function, as well as lipid and glucose metabolism, during Western diet–induced nutritional overload — and whether this interplay may drive sex-specific progression of MAFLD.

Given the liver’s central role in coordinating systemic lipid and glucose metabolism, the main objective of this project is to determine whether Sirt3 enhances hepatic mitochondrial function and lipid metabolism under conditions of Western diet–induced nutritional excess in a sex-specific manner, and whether the interplay between Sirt3 and sex affects hepatic metabolic health and contributes to sex-biased progression of MAFLD under these conditions.
