Project Initiative: National Virtual Organization ADRIA-METEO

The RBI Center for Informatics and Computer Science has put forth an initiative to create a national virtual organization ADRIA-METEO with the aim to foster cooperation in the development of systems for atmospheric forecasts in the Adriatic region using state of the art eScience platforms. Potential members of the consortium include the Centre for Informatics and Computer Science (RBI), the Department for Marine and Environmental Research (RBI), the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (Zagreb), the National Hydrometeorological Department and the Croatian Hydrographic Institute.

The Centre for informatics and computer science, has within both FP6 and FP7 projects, created an eScience platform for the setting up of virtual organizations based on distributed computer networks utilizing Grid infrastructure. The WRF-ARF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model, as well as the ROMS (Regional Ocean Modelling System)model have already been implemented on the existing platform.

The national virtual organization ADRIA-METEO would bring together scientists and experts in the fields of computer science, meteorology, hydrography and oceanology with the aim of simultaneously sharing e-infrastructure, computing resources, knowledge, data and experiences. In the context of this project using the eScience platform applications would be developed with the goal of raising the status of the Adriatic aquatorium. This project would have direct impact on environmental protection and security of the Adriatic sea.

As a supplement to the planned national project, an international aspect is also planned. The aim would be to develop solid cooperation with neighbour countries which share the Adriatic with Croatia and which have their own interests in developing security and environmental protection in the Adriatic. Potential partner countries include Italy, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Hercegoviina and Albania.
