RBI gets new accelerator

Apr 30th 2009

RBI launched a new generation particle accelerator today. The 18 MeV cyclotron 'Cyclone 18/9 HC' from Belgian firm IBA accelerates charged particles using a high-frequency, alternating voltage (potential difference).

New cyclotron is a successful revitalization of the old Zagreb cyclotron. Following the establishment of RUĐER MEDIKOL cyclotron Ltd. the acquisition of the new cyclotron was realized as a joint business venture between Ruđer Bošković Institute, Rudjer Innovations Ltd. and Medikol. Cyclotron will primarily be used for the radiopharmaceuticals production for the purposes of medical diagnostics of malignancies and neurological diseases like Alzheimer's. Besides that, the new cyclotron will find its application in basic scientific research in physics, biomedicine and radiochemistry.

Currently Croatia has no accelerator that can be used for commercial radioisotope production necessary for nuclear medicine and radiology. The new cyclotron will be able to supply Croatia and South European region with medicine radio pharmaceutics.

The cyclotron's experimental work on radio pharmaceutics will start in a few month's time.
