Laboratory for stereoselective catalysis and biocatalysis

Research in CAT-BIO includes the areas of biocatalysis, natural products and liquid crystals, which are interconnected by organic synthesis and chirality.

The scientific activity is directed towards the development of:

  • stereoselective synthetic and biocatalytic methods for the preparation of biologically active molecules
  • new bioactive compounds using natural products scaffold and their analogues derived from cultivated marine organisms
  • new organic materials that exhibit chiral self-assembly and investigation of the structure-property relation


CAT-BIO lab members are also members of the Centre of Excellence for marine bioprospecting BioProCro and partners on the project Bioprospecting of the Adriatic Sea.

Many years of experience in the field of organic synthesis and enantioseparation form the basis for a large number of past and current collaborations with the academic community and industry partners.


The CATBIO has an active and friendly research environment. Full time equivalent research students are undertaking graduate program at the doctoral level. In addition, we offer undergraduate students a first-hand opportunity to engage in our research projects in their final year.
