In this project, we will investigate the magnetic properties of manganese(II) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). We will compare the properties of a new class of manganese MOF-74 materials, IsoReticular IRMOF-74 derivatives, with those of the original MOF-74s. The IRMOF-74 materials are developed by molecular tailoring of the organic ligand, using a larger ligand, 3,3'- dihydroxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (dhbda), containing two benzene rings compared to the original MOF-74 linker, 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (dhta), which has one benzene ring. The project aims to investigate how ligand extension influences the magnetism of MOF-74 materials, exemplified by a comparison of manganese MOF-74 vs IRMOF-74 compounds. Namely, we expect that the intrachain exchange interaction will remain unchanged, while a significantly weaker interchain interaction can lead to the realization of a perfect 1D Ising-type magnetic chain.

This bilateral project will focus on the green mechanochemical synthesis and structural, spectroscopic, and detailed magnetic investigation of manganese(II) MOF-74 and IRMOF-74 compounds. Furthermore, the intermediate manganese complexes that occur during the synthesis will also be investigated. The results of the project will be compared with the results from the literature for similar compounds such as for nickel(II)-, iron(II)- and cobalt(II)-MOF-74 that show interesting magnetic phenomena such as 3D magnetic ordering, metamagnetic phase transitions, spin-crossover, switching of antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state by exchange solvents, etc.

     In addition, the proposed project will help strengthen existing collaborations and establish new ones between the RBI Zagreb and Leibniz IFW Dresden, which have complementary backgrounds in MOF synthesis and magneto-structural characterization.
